Why this matters more on a small basket

A 51mm basket holds less coffee in a narrower column, so an uneven bed has less depth to correct itself before the water reaches the bottom. Levelling costs five seconds and removes the most common cause of a fast, sour, spitting shot on the Dedica line.

Normcore makes this tool in 51, 53.3 and 58.5mm. Its own size guide maps the formats to brands — “51mm (DeLonghi), 54mm (Breville/Sage), 58mm (E61 groups, most commercial/prosumer machines, Gaggia, and La Marzocco)” — and De’Longhi’s own DLSC085 portafilter page states “51mm DIAMETER” for its manual machines. Both halves of that come from the makers themselves.
