Which tamper size fits your machine?

A tamper has one job: press the coffee into a level, even puck across the whole basket. So it has to match your basket's diameter — a tamper that's too small leaves an untamped ring around the edge where water channels straight through, and one that's too big won't enter the basket at all. The rule is simple: buy the tamper size that matches your portafilter.

Match the tamper to your portafilter size

Tampers are sold by the portafilter standard they're made for. The four you'll meet on common machines:

• 58mm — the commercial standard (La Marzocco, Rancilio, Lelit's 58mm line, Gaggia, most E61 machines). The most common tamper size.
• 57mm — Lelit's LELIT57 line (Anna, Diana). One millimetre narrower than 58, and not interchangeable with it.
• 54mm — Breville / Sage home machines. A 58mm tamper will not fit (see why 58mm doesn't fit Breville).
• 52mm — La Pavoni's current levers. Third-party tampers for these are often marketed as 51 or 51.5mm; the basket body is the thing to match, so check the machine's page.

A snug tamper is worth it: the closer it is to the basket's inner wall, the more even the puck. Precision tampers are therefore cut to a tolerance rather than to the round number, and the makers publish it: IMS recommends "a precision tamper sized between 58.4mm and 58.5mm" for its 58mm baskets, and VST specifies "58.40 +0.00 -0.05mm diameter flat face" for its 15g and larger sizes. You still buy by the nominal size, so a "58mm" machine takes a "58mm" tamper — the decimals are the manufacturing spec, not a different product.
